COSTA RICA CHAMPIONSHIP REPORT APRIL 1-4, 2018
/ Fishing reports / COSTA RICA CHAMPIONSHIP REPORT APRIL 1-4, 2018
Our regular clients arrange friendly fishing competitions every year. They compete with each other. In 2018, on my recommendation, it was decided to hold a Sea Fishing Championship in Costa Rica.

The event turned out to be so interesting and productive that we had a desire to organize a larger championship for all our clients who would like to compete in fishing for marlins, sailfish and other ocean predators next year.

Fishing for these fish species is excitable in itself, but if there is a tense struggle between several teams of like-minded people, the result will please even the most experienced anglers and will be remembered for a lifetime!

The Pacific Coast of Costa Rica is famous for the best ocean fishing on the planet and it is the place where numerous fishing competitions are held, including the World Cup. Together with our clients we regularly take part in such events, but it was for the first time that the “Royal Safari” Company acted as the organizer of the tournament.

We were responsible not only for the fishing and competitions, but also for the meeting and seeing off of the participants, their accommodation at comfortable villas in the best village of the entire Latin America,

recreational programs and excursions, meals and gala dinners for the Championship opening and closing, the selection of musicians, the production of author’s prizes, design and order of clothes,

the development of symbols and many other small things without which it is impossible to ensure a high level of such an event.

Every day of the tournament was full of bright moments and intense struggle between the participating teams. If you have a look at the final standings, you will see that the leaders changed every day and it was not possible to predict the winner till the last moment.

Five teams, consisting of 3-4 anglers each, were fighting for the main prize on five modern boats equipped with the latest technology. We had selected the best skippers and sailors for the Championship and provided all the crews with the latest tackle and baits.

The rules of the Championship were simple, understandable and corresponded to the rules of the World Cup.

The team-winner and the best angler were determined by the largest number of points scored. We limited the number of fish species which were taken into account to exclude the purposeful fishing for small ones. It is forbidden to kill marlins, sailfish or sharks in Costa Rica, so all the representatives of these species were released after a short photo shoot.

The following catches were taken into account:

    – marlin 500 points

    – sailfish 100 points

    – yellowfin tuna, dorado, wahoo, shark – 50 points.

Zero point for any other fish.

It was strictly forbidden to let the sailors pull any fish out (such a catch was not taken into account). The sailors were allowed to strike, but had to give a spinning rod back to one of the anglers immediately. In the individual competition it was forbidden to transfer a spinning rod from one angler to another. If the fish was landed by two anglers not one, the points were given to the team, but not to any of the anglers.

The captains registered all the catches on a special form and in the evening the results were recorded in the standings. As evidence of the catch, a photo or video with the fixed time was required (it is possible to do it with the help of any camera or phone). The anglers were responsible for the shooting, as at the moment of fighting the crew is completely focused on boat control and on taking the trophy on board or releasing it.

All the catches qualifying for the category “The Best Angler” had to be confirmed by a photo or video showing the process of fighting. All the fish qualifying for the nomination “The Largest Fish Captured” had to be delivered to the port and weighed. The weighing process was video recorded by the members of the team. Only fish species that can be legally caught and had a gastronomic value participated in the category.

The fishing started at 7.00 a.m. (the fish caught earlier were not taken into account). It was allowed to start later (according to the desire of a team). The fishing was over at 3.00 p.m. This time was one and the same for everyone. No catches were registered after 3.00 p.m. But the fish which had been caught before 3.00 p.m. and pulled out after were registered provided that there was a photo or video confirmation of the catch.

The team-winner was the team from the Ukraine. They caught 3 marlins and a sailfish on the last day of fishing. Alexander was given the title “The Best Angler”. Sergey took the prize in “The Largest Fish Captured” category for the largest tuna he caught.
