COSTA RICA FISHING REPORT OCTOBER 17-24, 2017.
/ Fishing reports / COSTA RICA FISHING REPORT OCTOBER 17-24, 2017.
The story of this fishing started when Tatyana told me about her husband Valery who had unsuccessfully tried to catch marlin in 8 different countries. So, she asked me to arrange a guaranteed fishing for this prestigious trophy.

I offered to go fishing for marlins to our favorite point in Costa Rica with an overnight stay on the boat. While arranging the tour, I found out that our guests would be Tatyana’s husband Valery, their son Denis, and their friend Dmitry, and, by the way, the fishing was a birthday present for the men from their wives.

Together with our skipper we had chosen the most successful fishing dates taking into account the Moon phases, and on October 17, 2017 we met our clients at Juan Santa Maria International Airport (SJO), had a seafood dinner at a Peruvian restaurant, and headed towards the Pacific coast.

After a day of leisure on the beach and surfing, we went fishing, to be more precise, we went on a real excursion for marlins.

For 2 days a comfortable boat became our home and we went to the farthest points located about 100 miles away from the shore. We went out to the ocean in the late afternoon to be able to admire the sunset against the background of the coast and the coastal islands. After dinner, we went to sleep to our spacious cabins to be ready for the morning fishing the next day.

At 5.30 a.m. we were woken up by a loud voice of our skipper who told us the good news: the first marlin was on the hook. In a minute I came to the deck with a camera in my hands where I found Valery in the midst of fighting against blue marlin which was making endless jumps out of the water.

Valery was quite good at retrieving, so, at breakfast the members of our team were in high spirits and decided to celebrate a successful beginning by a little bit of rum.

At about 6.30 in the morning I came up to the captain’s bridge to make an introductory video. We took a professional camera man with us to make video of the whole process of fishing for the “Fishing and Hunting” Channel and for the guys’ wives as well.

Hardly had I said a few introductory phrases when quite a large marlin struck the bait, by the way, we were live. We were able to make video of the strike and while Denis was fighting against the powerful rival, I congratulated myself for another successful fishing. I managed to fulfill a long-cherished desire of the father and son to catch marlins.

One strike can happen by chance but 2 strikes in the first hour of fishing definitely proved the right choice of the fishing date and spot.

Then Dmitry occupied the fishing chair instead of Denis who was tired but satisfied. And again, another blue marlin was dancing its bewitching dance in front of our boat.

Watching all this magnificence, I was once again convinced of the fact that there are no better places on our planet for the trolling sea fishing than our farthest fishing points in Costa Rica.

In the evening, having barbecue from different kinds of meat and fish cooked right on the boat, we summed up the first day. We got 8 blue marlin trophies, the weather was wonderful, the sea was calm, and it was not so hot due to the dense clouds.

One more day of fishing was waiting for us ahead and we went to sleep early. You can get a perfect sleep on the boat when the sea is calm (storms in Costa Rica are of great rarity). The second morning was quieter, we caught the first marlin at 7.30 a.m., and decided to change the place of fishing and go to another point.

Our farthest points are the tops of seamounts where we have special attractors which are some kind of shelters for small tuna. Such a fodder base created due to the abundance of tuna retains pelagic predators, marlins and sharks, in particular.

The weather was sunny and marlins preferred live tuna to artificial baits. There could have been even more strikes, but sharks attacked our live baits. Having caught two more marlins and over 10 sharks, we went home.

Unfortunately, one of marlins had swallowed the hook too deep and had practically turned its stomach inside out. We tried to release it but failed. The fish just kept beating on the surface, so, not to leave it for the sharks we took the fish aboard.

We always try to release all the marlins and sailfish we catch in Costa Rica and due to this their population is growing every year.

It is not by chance that Costa Rica has gained the status of “the fishing capital of the world” and the Cup Finals of the World Championships are held here (they have never been held in the same place twice before).

On our way home just in the open ocean, we caught a good dorado which was quite unusual as these fish usually follow different floating objects.

At the sunset about 50 miles from the shore another marlin struck. That was the perfect end of our wonderful trip. Denis pulled it up to the boat when it was already dark.

We had a total of 12 marlins, 10 sharks and 1 dorado. Our clients were satisfied, they spent the rest of the tour going on excursions, relaxing on the beach, and making plans for the next fishing.

The wives of our clients inspired with the photos of our fishing and excursions decided to accept our offer to go to the Republic of South Africa and Zimbabwe and Madagascar next year.

Watch the TV show about our fishing on fishing channels and come to Costa Rica to fight against various trophies!

We can arrange an efficient fishing for you any time of the year.

A lot of fishing competitions are held in Costa Rica including the World Championship, and we are ready to find the best skippers and sailors for you who will do their best to ensure your victory.
